Well its really hard to imagine how graphic designers in the pre-computer era would have been doing all the design work, things haven't changed much even now, designers do create a copy of designs on the paper even today, the only difference is we don't assume that as final product, what we create on paper now a days is quite fondly called as "rough sketch" or a mockup of the original idea, the final product are very well designed and crafted on computers after taking references from the rought sketch that is there on the paper.

With the advent of computers things have both become easy as well  for designers, easy in the sense that computers are the best machines to develop a graphic design. How ever experts still feel that creating a rough draft on paper is ideal before you start with a task of graphic design, another thing that adds zing is that graphic designing has become affordable and quite more High Quality based than it ever was.

A prime example that I can provide is about designing and composition of a book that was in a local language here in India. It was slow and costly job to get a book designed and composed, with the advent of computers its just a matter of days earlier it used to take months of time to compose a 60 page book.
